ETImage “Barbie” is up for eight awards but is only the favorite for best original song. So while the Oscars have traditionally celebrated prestige films, Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster was undeniable, scoring eight Oscar nominations. Billie Eilish’s heart-wringing track “What Was I Made For?” won song of the year at the Grammys, and it is the front-runner in its Oscars category. And in 2003, Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York” scored 10 nominations but no trophies. The best potential parallel to “Barbie” may be Bradley Cooper’s 2018 remake of “A Star Is Born,” which was nominated for eight Oscars and walked away with only best song.

The production designer Jack Fisk is the artistic force behind the look of a number of beloved movies: numerous Terrence Malick films like “Badlands” and “The Thin Red Line,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood,” Alejandro Iñárritu’s “The Revenant,” and, most recently, Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” for which Fisk is nominated for an Oscar. When the writer Noah Gallagher Shannon decided to profile Fisk for The New York Times Magazine, he didn’t know much about production design. After reporting the piece, Noah says he learned that often when people appreciate the cinematography of a movie, what they’re actually appreciating is the production design: what the frame looks like, rather than how the frame was captured. And Jack Fisk, he found, has a singular philosophy and approach to making the world captured in each movie frame come to life.

☆ A Film Festival in the Back of a Taxi

Some of international cinema’s biggest names gathered on Tuesday night at the Berlin International Film Festival as the event honored Martin Scorsese with a lifetime achievement award. Irene Jaxtheimer, who runs a taxi company, passed around homemade popcorn. A generator outside the cab powered a modest television, a DVD player and a small electric heater. The unconventional screening, just outside a centerpiece event for one of Europe’s most prestigious film festivals, was part of the makeshift TaxiFilmFest. Running through Sunday, it is partly a protest over the miserable state of the taxi industry these days and partly a counterfestival to celebrate the taxi cab’s iconic place in the urban cultural landscape.

In the early 1980s, 19-year-old Jordan Belfort — who would go on to become known as the Wolf of Wall Street, a title he bestowed on himself in a tell-all memoir — had a fortuitous encounter on Jones Beach, on Long Island, with another teenager selling ice cream named Stephen Drescher. The two became friends. Prosecutors would later note their shared hustling spirit, a drive for entrepreneurialism that curdled into a drive for grift. Within a few years, Mr. Belfort started building a pump-and-dump stock-scam empire. Mr. Drescher went down not long after, convicted of securities fraud and sent to federal prison for nearly four years.

CNN —Actor Robert De Niro has opened up about the “joy” of new fatherhood after welcoming his seventh child last year. The Oscar-winning actor and his girlfriend Tiffany Chen welcomed daughter Gia in April. In 1995, he welcomed twin sons, Aaron and Julian, with his then-girlfriend, Toukie Smith. De Niro was also previously married to Grace Hightower before they split in 2018, and the pair are parents to son Elliot and daughter Helen Grace. David Grann’s 2017 nonfiction book “Killers of the Flower Moon” was a gripping history of greed and murder on an oil-rich Osage reservation in Oklahoma. “Grann has proved himself a master of spinning delicious, many-layered mysteries that also happen to be true,” Dave Eggers wrote in his review for The Times. Scott about both the book and the movie, and the sometimes surprising ways they diverge. “Scorsese’s adaptation … is a very different creature,” Scott says. “It’s the same story, but it has such a different feel and texture, and gets you thinking about different aspects of the story.”

Mr. Burkhart acts on simple, underdeveloped moral principles — and often not exactly out of malice, but self-interest. “Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s movie about the development of the atomic bomb, on Thursday received the highest number of nominations for this year’s EE British Academy Film Awards, known as the BAFTAs. The film secured 13 nods for Britain’s equivalent of the Oscars, including for best film, where it is up against four other titles including “Killers of The Flower Moon,” Martin Scorsese’s epic about the Osage murders of the 1920s, and “Poor Things,” Yorgos Lanthimos’s sexually charged take on a Frankenstein story starring Emma Stone. “Poor Things” followed “Oppenheimer” with 11 nominations overall. CNN —The nominees for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, with “Oppenheimer” leading the charge with 13 nominations. There were few surprises from the British Academy, with strong awards season favorites faring well, including Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with 11 nominations and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” with nine. The DVD service was particularly handy when I decided to embark on a career-spanning marathon of all Martin Scorsese’s movies. The most rented movie overall was “The Blind Side” (never saw it) and the most rented TV show “Dexter” (a video store rental for me in 2010). The “Tár” outlier speaks to one of the beautiful aspects of the Netflix DVD. (Don’t sleep on De Niro’s deliciously unhinged performance in “The King of Comedy.”) For all Netflix DVD users, though, De Niro rests at a healthy but comparatively modest fifth place. So his team called casting director Rene Haynes, who’s spent the last three decades finding Native American talent for film and television projects. For “Killers of the Flower Moon,” she worked with Scorsese’s longtime casting director Ellen Lewis to find actors to play the plethora of Native parts.
